Your completed Notice of Intended Marriage must be given to your celebrant at least one month before the wedding, and no more than 18 months before. Once the NOIM is lodged, you can book your ceremony for a date inside that one-to-18-month window.
A Notice of Intended Marriage is valid for up to 18 months after it is lodged. If you still want to marry after that period, Melbourne Marriage Registry can sign a new NOIM for you without a second lodgement fee. Call the office before the existing notice expires.
Yes. Only one party needs to lodge the Notice on the couple’s behalf. Both people’s details must be completed at lodgement. Supporting identification still needs to be supplied before the wedding, with originals shown on the day. The other party must sign the NOIM before the ceremony. Authorised celebrants can also witness that signing by remote video, such as WhatsApp or FaceTime.
Yes. Download the Notice of Intended Marriage, have it legally witnessed, then email a scan or photo to Melbourne Marriage Registry, or mail the form to 893-915 Punt Road, South Yarra VIC 3141. You can also bring the original to the celebrant on the wedding day before the ceremony. Identity copies lodged from overseas should be certified by an Australian consulate, embassy official, or notary public.
Usually no. The Marriage Act 1961 requires at least one month’s notice. In limited circumstances a court can grant a shortening of time. If you think you may be eligible, call Melbourne Marriage Registry and the team will explain the government process.
There are two payments. Part one is a $175 non-refundable fee to lodge the Notice of Intended Marriage (including a transfer from another celebrant). Part two is the ceremony fee, which covers the celebrant, legal paperwork, and use of the South Yarra ceremony room. Registry ceremonies start from under $300, with the exact amount depending on the date, time, and guest numbers. See the price guide for the current schedule.
You need evidence of date and place of birth and identity for both parties, plus proof of how any previous marriage ended. If you were born in Australia, that is usually a birth certificate plus a current driver licence or proof-of-age card, or a passport. If you were born overseas, provide a non-Australian passport or birth certificate. After a divorce, provide the divorce order. After a death, provide the death certificate. Documents not in English need a NAATI translation. You can start the form if some answers are still missing, but everything must be complete before the ceremony.
Melbourne Marriage Registry is at 893-915 Punt Road, South Yarra VIC 3141. It is a private registry-style wedding service run by Commonwealth-authorised marriage celebrants. It is not Births, Deaths and Marriages Victoria and it does not issue the official government marriage certificate. After the ceremony, your celebrant registers the marriage with BDM Victoria, and you order the official certificate from bdm.vic.gov.au.
Yes. Choose the transfer option on the form, or tell the team when you call. The $175 lodgement fee includes transferring an existing Notice of Intended Marriage to Melbourne Marriage Registry.
Yes. Two witnesses aged 18 or over must sign on the wedding day. They do not need to be Australian residents or citizens. If you are eloping and cannot bring witnesses, Melbourne Marriage Registry can arrange them for a fee. Weekend witness hire costs more than a weekday. Call the office for a quote on your date.
The Melbourne Marriage Registry team reviews your request and contacts you with the next step, including any documents still needed. If you are lodging a NOIM, you will complete the legal notice and pay the $175 lodgement fee. If you are booking a ceremony, a preferred date is a request until the team confirms availability.
